Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix (which connects female genitalia to the uterus). The condition is usually caused by a bacterial infection such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Chlamydia trachomatis. In other cases, conditions such as HIV or herpes simplex may contribute to the condition. Many women allergic to latex may also be affected, as are women already suffering from an injury or irritation in the area.
Risks of acquiring cervicitis increase with multiple partners, or in women who have engaged in close physical relations at an early age.
Learning identify symptoms of cervicitis helps prevent complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease or inflammation of other female organs.
Instructions
1. Pay attention to any type of pain or irritation in the area. This pain or irritation may or may not be accompanied by a discharge.
2. Take note of any discharge that is thick in consistency, or a curd-like discharge that looks greenish-white in color.
3. Watch for any signs of bleeding after having sex. This is often an indication that the lining of the cervix walls are sore and irritated.
4. Be aware that if you have had any infections in the genital area that were not treated by a physician, that the infection may spread to the cervix. Always seek the help of a medical professional for such infections, as the bacteria may proliferate and grow without a person being aware of it.
