Explain Atom Bonding To Kids

Any topic should be explained to kids in a very simple and interesting way, especially topics related to science. Kids sometimes have problems understanding concepts they cannot see. At the same time, if it is taught in an exciting manner, they grasp ideas more quickly.

Instructions

Explaining Atoms

1. Ask simple scientific questions that can be related with the concept of atom. Some sample questions are: "Have you seen an atom?", "What is the smallest thing that you have seen with your eyes?", "Have you ever used a microscope?", and "Can we see an atom using microscope?".

2. Explain to them that everything is made up of smaller things. Use an example of a building block set. Just as the blocks create one building made up of several building blocks, animals and objects are made up of tiny, individual parts called atoms. Explain that even though we cannot see them, atoms exist.

3. Explain the concept with the help of a visible item, a stone. Do an activity, such as breaking the stone with the hammer a safe distance away from the children.

4. Continue breaking down the pieces of stone as much as possible, so that it becomes as fine as sand. Tell the kids that this sand can again be broken down so that they could not see the particles with their eyes, but only with a microscope. Explain to them that the smallest part of the sand which could not be broken any further is known as an atom.

5. Create models of an atom and some other objects that are actually small. Objects like an atom and an eyeball can be modeled.

6. Explain to them that inside an atom, there is a nucleus, which is made up of protons and neutrons. Explain the concept of electrons orbiting nucleus with the help of planets and sun.
