Bone cancer is a cancer form typified by unrestrained proliferation of cells lining the bones. Bone cancer is a common form of cancer affecting canines as well as humans. According to Vet Surgery Central, nearly 10,000 dogs are diagnosed with bone cancer annually worldwide. There are various types of bone cancer affecting dogs, with osteosarcoma (cancer originating in the osteoblasts) and multiple myeloma being the most common types. Fortunately, treatment options are available.
Instructions
1. Amputation of the infected limb is the most common method used to treat dogs suffering from bone cancer. Amputation is frequently performed particularly to reduce the pain and discomfort of the dog. The surgery is generally performed by giving a local or a general anesthesia, depending upon the severity of the condition. The dog may be required to stay at the hospital post-surgery for two to three days.
2. Post-amputation chemotherapy sessions increase the effectiveness of the surgical method and increase the survival chances of the dog. In these sessions, anti-cancer drugs such as cisplatin and carboplatin are injected into the bloodstream to kill the cancerous cells if any remain post-surgery. Chemotherapy starts two to three weeks after the amputation and is generally done every two to three weeks for several months.
3. Consider radiotherapy as a possible treatment method. Radiotherapy, also called radiation therapy, involves exposing the cancerous cells to high frequency radiations such as X-rays and gamma rays to reduce pain. Radiation therapy sessions are frequently held regularly for nearly three to four months. However, this method is mostly palliative care and seldom helps in destroying the malignant cells and curing the condition.
4. Consider alternative methods to diminish pain in the dog. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and narcotics are often prescribed. Placing an ice pack at the site of surgery post-amputation might also be helpful in reducing the pain. Certain veterinarians recommend acupuncture to relieve the pain.
