Eat Low Carb Diets Safely

Eat Low Carb Diets Safely

Low carb dieting is no longer a fad, but has become an established method of keeping one's weight under control. Whether your goal is to loose a couple of pounds, or 100, by incorporating a few simple preventative measures into your low carb eating you will increase the likelihood that you will remain healthy and prevent harmful side effects.

Instructions

1. Prevent kidney issues by drinking at least 64 oz. of water daily since decreasing your consumption of carbohydrates can increase the work load on the kidneys.

2. Choose low fat protein sources. Typical low carbohydrate diets call for an increase in protein consumption. When the majority of this source is animal protein, dietary cholesterol and saturated fat intake is increased which can lead to heart disease. Opt for more soy products such as tofu, low fat dairy, legumes, egg whites and fish.

3. Rev up your fiber intake with plenty of low carb fruits and vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, berries and melons. High protein, low carbohydrate eating often falls short of the 28 to 42 g of fiber recommended for adults.

4. Supplement your diet daily with a good multi-vitamin with minerals, but without iron. Magnesium, potassium and calcium should be included in your multi-vitamin since they keep your electrolytes in balance which can be an issue with high protein, low carbohydrate diets. Since protein is a primary source of iron and too much iron is just as bad as too little, your multi-vitamin should not contain iron.

5. Prepare natural, fresh foods, rather than opting for processed, low carb snacks and meals which are higher in sodium, fats and calories. In addition, more processing generally decreases much of the nutrition. When drastically limiting carbohydrates it becomes even more necessary to get as much nutrition from every gram as possible.
