An abdominal aneurysm is an abnormal growth of part of the aorta outside of the heart, and can exist for years without causing any symptoms. The risk of having an abdominal aneurysm is higher in people who have heart disease, are overweight, smoke, are older than 60 or are male. If the aneurysm becomes large or ruptures, symptoms may develop suddenly and quickly become life threatening.
Cardiac Changes
Cardiac changes are a sign of abdominal aneurysm. A fast pulse without having recently exercised, along with low blood pressure are symptoms of abdominal aneurysm. Other cardiac symptoms of abdominal aneurysm may include dizziness or loss of consciousness if the aneurysm ruptures.
Neurological Changes
Sudden neurological changes may be a sign of abdominal aneurysm. Otherwise unexplained feelings of anxiety can be a symptom of abdominal aneurysm, especially if the feeling is accompanied by physical symptoms of aneurysm. If the abdominal aneurysm ruptures, the brain may go into shock due to lack of oxygen, with little or no warning.
Pain
Pain is a symptom of an abdominal aneurysm that has become large or ruptured. Chest or abdominal pain that develops quickly and is severe may be a sign of abdominal aneurysm, and the pain can spread into the pelvis and buttocks. Pain may also suddenly occur in the lower back after an abdominal aneurysm has burst.
Skin Changes
Changes in the skin in the abdominal region are a sign of abdominal aneurysm. The skin over the abdomen may become sweaty and feel cold or clammy as the aneurysm becomes larger. The abdominal skin may also become swollen, reddish and firm to the touch as the aneurysm increases in size or ruptures.
Unusual Sensations
Unusual sensations in the abdomen are a symptom of abdominal aneurysm. An abdominal aneurysm that is close to rupturing may cause a pulsating or thumping sensation near the belly button due to an excess of blood pooling in the aorta at the aneurysm site. An unusual feeling of pressure or fullness that develops suddenly in the abdomen may also be a sign of abdominal aneurysm.
