Treatment For Lip Herpes

Lip herpes is also known as a cold sore. Stresses such as colds, hormone fluctuations, and sun and wind exposure can all lead to a herpes outbreak. Lip herpes is a contagious virus. Once a person has an outbreak of herpes, subsequent outbreaks are possible.

Prescription medication

Antiviral medications that are used for genital herpes also work for oral herpes. These require a prescription.

Lysine supplements

Taking a lysine supplement can prevent a lip herpes outbreak or can make it last fewer days.

Lip Balms

Keeping the lip herpes lesion moist is important. Medicated lip balms are available that reduce the pain and keep the surface moist so it does not crack and bleed.

Over the Counter Medications

Over the counter medications, such as Abreva, are available and may shorten the duration of a lip herpes outbreak.

When to Treat

Use treatments at the first sign of an outbreak for the greatest chance of success and the shortest duration. Avoid kissing during an outbreak, as this is when you are contagious.
