Treat Diaper Rash With Home Remedies

Treat Diaper Rash Naturally

Diaper rash is a very common type of irritant dermatitis that primarily affects babies. While there are numerous over the counter diaper rash treatments available, many people prefer to use natural remedies on baby's delicate skin. Not only are natural diaper rash treatments chemical free, they can also be much cheaper.

Instructions

1. Prevent diaper rash from becoming severe by keeping the area clean and dry. Diaper rash occurs when skin gets irritated from prolonged exposure to urine and the chemicals in disposable diapers. The best way to prevent it from forming in the first place is to frequently change soiled diapers. When changing baby's diaper allow the skin a few moments to dry out in fresh air before putting on a new diaper. Refrain from using baby powder. While yes, baby powder will absorb extra liquid, the cornstarch that it is made out of promotes the growth of certain types of yeast that can cause diaper rash. If wetness is an issue, gently dry the area with a soft cloth before each diaper change.

2. Protect baby's skin. For the common case of irritant diaper rash, protecting the skin from further irritation is the best treatment. Cover your baby's skin with a barrier cream. You can use store bought zinc oxide diaper rash creams, but if you prefer something more natural you can make a homemade diaper rash ointment out of lanolin and calendula oil. You can find lanolin in the baby care section of most stores. It's traditionally used to protect the nipples of breastfeeding mothers from chaffing. Calendula oil can be purchased at health food stores and vitamin shops.

3. If you suspect that your baby's diaper rash is caused by yeast, the only way to really cure it is to get rid of the infection. Often times yeast diaper rash can be cured at home by using plain, organic yogurt. Yogurt has antibiotic and antifungal properties. It will soothe baby's skin and kill yeast at the same time. Apply room temperature yogurt to the diaper area with each change to clear up diaper rash that is caused by yeast.
