TMJ syndrome is a condition caused by dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint. The jaw joint and muscles sometimes become "locked." Chewing is difficult, headaches develop, and opening and closing the jaw can be painful. Causes may include clenching teeth during sleep, rheumatoid arthritis, stress and injury to the jaw. If you think you have TMJ syndrome, consult your doctor. She probably will perform an arthrography, a diagnostic test, to see whether your symptoms indicate TMJ syndrome. If it's determined that you have this condition, it may be recommended that you wear a bite plate or, in extreme circumstances, have surgery. There are natural remedies, as well, that may be beneficial.
Instructions
1. Modify your diet to include whole grains, skinless poultry, fish, fresh fruits, steamed veggies, onions, garlic, pineapple, brown rice and eggs, which can help rebuild cartilage and reduce inflammation. Eating softer foods will lessen the pressure and discomfort in the jaw when you chew. Avoid junk food, gum, sugary foods, alcohol and caffeine, which can further exacerbate your symptoms.
2. Take herbs that help relieve stress, such as passionflower, valerian, catnip, kava kava, nettle, chamomile and St. John's wort. Check for drug interactions before using any herb. Kava kava should only be taken for a brief period of time because of possible liver toxicity. If you are allergic to ragweed, do not take chamomile.
3. Hold a heat pack to the area of your jaw that is affected, to relieve pain.
4. Consider acupuncture. It might help reduce pain and other symptoms.
5. Try deep breathing exercises and other relaxation techniques to relieve stress and pain.
6. Avoid sleeping on your side. Sleeping on your back will keep you from being in a position that worsens your TMJ symptoms. Some experts suggest putting beanbags beside your head to keep you from automatically going back to sleeping on your side.
