If you must deliver a baby without any help, don't panic. Follow these steps and everything should be fine.
Instructions
1. Make the mother to be as comfortable as possible with pillows and blankets. If there are no pillows or blankets immediately available, improvise-use anything nearby to help make her comfortable.
2. Call your local emergency number, a doctor or a midwife. Be sure to follow whatever directions she gives you and answer any questions she has as quickly and as accurately as possible. If any emergency personnel gives you instructions that are different from what's listed here, follow those instructions instead.
3. Position the mother to be so that her upper body is slightly elevated, place the mothers feet flat on the ground and open her legs. In most cases, she was probably planning on having her baby in a hospital or birthing center and not having a stranger deliver her baby. Remain polite, respectful and calm during this emergency.
4. Tell the mother to breathe quickly during contractions and push only during the contractions. If she knows Lamaze, coach her gently during the contractions; focusing on the breathing and pushing can help take the mother's mind off the pain.
5. Place a hand on the baby's head as it crowns. This prevents the head from just popping free and possibly causing damage to the skull or neck. It is very important to remind the mother to continue to breathe quickly during this time, so she remains calm and relaxed when not having contractions.
6. Support the head as it exits the mother's body. Never pull on the head or neck during delivery. Once the shoulders are free, it is possible to gently guide the child out the rest of way while continuing to support the head. You've delivered the baby.
7. Clean fluid out of the nose and mouth of the baby and place the baby against the mother's skin; be sure the head is slightly lowered to help drain any fluids. Do not cut the umbilical cord. Wait for medical professionals to arrive or follow the instructions of a medical professional over the phone. The placenta may emerge before medical personal arrive; if this happens be sure to place it near the mother and child.
