Psyllium Husk Benefits

Psyllium husk in various forms has been used as a preventative and remedy for a variety of conditions. From cardiac health to digestive maintenance, psyllium husk and its derivatives can be a helpful dietary supplement.

Cholesterol Reduction

Psyllium is often promoted as an aid in reducing LDL cholesterol, as well as total cholesterol. The recommended dosage for cholesterol reduction is 5 grams of seed husk twice daily.

Constipation

Perhaps psyllium's best-known role is that of laxative. Psyllium has been touted for its effect on bowel movements and their frequency. Total digestion time is reportedly sped up with the use of psyllium.

Diarrhea

Patients suffering diarrhea may benefit from taking psyllium. While psyllium speeds transit time through the digestive tract, it also serves as a bulking agent.

Anal Fissures

Tears in the anus, known as anal fissures, often result from conditions like diarrhea, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Whether psyllium heals these fissures has not been adequately studied.

Colon Cancer Prevention

Some research indicates that diets including psyllium may lower the incidence or risk of colon cancer.

Psyllium Products

Psyllium husk is available in supplement form, in many staple items and in over-the-counter treatments. These products include Heartwise and Bran Buds cereals, Metamucil, Lunelax, Fiberall, Effersyllium and Regulan, among others.
