Massage Oil Benefits

Massage therapy is used to increase circulation, facilitate the removal of toxins and soften tense muscles while promoting the parasympathetic nervous system. In conjunction with the massage benefits, you should pay attention to the type of oil you choose before you begin your next massage, as different oils yield different benefits.

Coconut Oil

If your body temperature is elevated, such as when receiving a massage outdoors in the middle of a blazing summer day, reach for coconut oil, which has a cooling effect. Additionally, coconut oil has microbial properties in it which protect your skin from infection and help to combat wrinkles.

Thicker Oils

If you are cold, use olive or sesame oils. Both work to fight free radicals in your body when absorbed through massage. These oils promote healthy cellular function.

Moisture

Massage oil plays a significant role in the moisturizing of your skin. Coconut oil contains fatty acids which help to plump the skin and feed it moisture during the massage. Hazelnut is a faster drying oil which does not leave a residue behind but still maintains the skin's suppleness.

Essential Oils

Use infused oils in your massage to add the benefits of essential oils to your massage experience. For instance, try chamomile oil to help sooth dry, irritated skin and add a calming effect as inhaled. Choose carrot root oil to help clear up skin blemishes. Eucalyptus oil can be used to help clear up congestion or asthma difficulties. Store your essential oil infused massage oils in a dark colored glass container as they can break down plastic containers. The oils should not be exposed to direct light for long periods of time.

Considerations

Discontinue use of your massage oil if skin irritation begins and consult your doctor. If you are giving a massage, check in with your friend frequently to make sure that your pressure and the massage oil are not causing him any discomfort. Also, consult a doctor before administering massage therapy on a pregnant woman as she should not be exposed to certain essential oils or have specific trigger points massaged. Finally, if your oil smells rancid, trust your nose and throw it out.
