Ringing in the ears, or tinnitus, is an uncomfortable condition. The good news, however, is that the condition is rarely chronic. Most people experience relief after the cause of the ringing is determined.
Because there is no one cure all for tinnitus, you may need to try several of these home remedies before something works for you. If the ringing persists, see a doctor.
Instructions
1. There are several home remedies for tinnitus symptoms. But first, take your blood pressure. Tinnitus can be a symptom of a blood pressure abnormality. Many grocery stores and pharmacies have machines available that take your blood pressure for free. Normal blood pressure is at or under 120/80. Consult your doctor if your blood pressure is higher than 120/80. This may be the cause of your tinnitus.
2. Protect your ears and your hearing by wearing ear plugs or ear muffs when you're in noisy environments like construction zones or doing noisy tasks like mowing the lawn.
3. Reduce your sodium intake by at least 10 percent.
4. Reduce aspirin consumption. Some research suggests that high doses of aspirin can cause temporary ringing in the ears. However, if you are on a aspirin regimen prescribed or recommended by your doctor, check with your physician before cutting back.
5. Get some more rest. For some people, flu and persistent colds can cause swelling in the ear canal. This swelling can cause ringing in the ears. If you give your body the chance to recover from the illness, you might experience relief from the tinnitus as well.
6. If your tinnitus symptoms persist for more than one week or are severe enough to inhibit your daily activities, see a doctor. Rarely, ear ringing requires medicinal or surgical therapy. Your doctor should be able to determine the cause of your symptoms and find a suitable treatment.
