First Symptoms Of Colon Cancer

Each year, according to the Mayo Clinic, more than 100,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer. Known also as colorectal cancer, this cancer is found in the lower 6 inches of the large intestine. In most cases, cancer of the colon starts as a mass of small, non-cancerous polyps. At this stage, you may have no symptoms. Having the recommended medical screenings can detect pre-cancerous polyps and prevent cancer from developing. If the polyps become cancerous, the first signs will be constipation, gas, bloating, abnormal stools, cramping, and weight loss.

Changes In Bowel Movements

Constipation is one of the first signs that something is not right. More symptoms include diarrhea, gas, and bloating. If you do not feel your bowels are emptied following a movement, this could be another sign that something is wrong.

Abnormal Stool

Your stool will begin showing abnormalities, like being uncharacteristically thin or narrow. You may start noticing some bleeding or even stools that are discolored from blood in the rectum.

Abdominal Cramps

Abdominal cramps, characterized by painful muscle contractions in the stomach, could be a sign of any number of problems. But when combined with the other symptoms listed here, you should report your symptoms to a doctor right away.

Weight Loss

Sudden weight loss, like abdominal cramping, can be a sign of many different problems. Again, when combined with changes in bowel movements and stool abnormalities, you should seek out a diagnosis. Along with weight loss, you may be fatigued and have little energy and persistent weakness.

Colon Screening

Everyone should begin getting regular screenings for colon cancer by the age of 50---age being the only risk factor all people have in common. Those who have a history of cancer or other related conditions in their families should begin screenings earlier. The first sign of colon cancer is the appearance of pre-cancerous polyps in the large intestine. If caught and treated early enough, the development of cancer can be prevented.
