Hypoglycemia & Diverticulitis Diet Tips

Hypoglycemia and diverticulitis are conditions that can develop from a poor diet. Consuming large amounts of sugar but very little fiber can result in mild or rather severe cases of either condition. Both are treatable by focusing on education and implementation of a proper diet. Lowering sugar intake as well as caffeine, alcohol and tobacco consumption while increasing fiber in your diet is highly recommended for treatment as well as for decreasing the recurrence of both conditions.

Definitions

Hypoglycemia is the inability of the body to process primarily large intakes of sugar. Eating too much sugar creates a situation wherein the pancreas sends out too much insulin in the body and blood sugar levels remain too low. With high consumption, sugars can no longer be broken down properly in the digestive process. Symptoms can be both emotional and physical. Diverticulitis is a condition in which pouches in the colon or large intestine bulge and become inflamed. Constipation is common. Pain and tenderness usually occur in the lower left side of the abdomen.

Sugars

Consuming too much sugar and processed foods causes both conditions. Hypoglycemia occurs with a mixture of large amounts of sugars (often contained in processed foods) and high consumption of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. Add in a large helping of stress, and hypoglycemia may develop. Same goes for diverticulitis. A large intake of processed foods (most contain a lot of sugar), little or no exercise, and very little fiber in the diet are common causes of this affliction.

Diet

Decreasing your intake of sugar is first on the list to treat both conditions and then to maintain overall good health. Also decrease caffeine, alcohol and tobacco consumption. Increasing fiber consumption is also very important. Eating large quantities of beans, whole-grain cereals, most fruits, and starchy or green vegetables, along with taking some doctor-approved gastrointestinal fiber supplements, will aid in treatment of both conditions and help to ensure they do not recur. Exercise will also improve digestion.
