A stuffy nose is a problem that everyone will experience many times during their lifetime. Some people get stuffy noses because of the humidity of the home or temperature outdoors. Other causes include sinus congestion and/or certain allergies. There are many safe and effective ways to quickly get rid of a stuffy nose.
Instructions
1. Get a humidifier. A humidifier keeps the air moist in your home. It causes the mucous membranes in the nose to remain moist. Extremely dry air causes the mucous membranes to become too dry, resulting in a stuffy nose. Make sure the filter is being changed in your humidifier as needed, to keep clean air circulating in your home at all times.
2. Apply a warm moist compress on your face to cover your eyes, nose and mouth. You can apply it as many times as you need it. The warm moisture from the compress helps to dilate (open up) the blood vessels. Which helps to decongest your sinus cavities, making it easier for you to breathe.
3. Take a hot shower. The steam will help to relieve some of the pressure in your head and nose. This will also help to dilate the blood vessels. Thereby, clearing the nasal passage way, making it easier to breathe again. It is a good idea to take a hot shower before bed to clear the nasal passageway. This will allow you to sleep more comfortably.
4. Get an over-the-counter decongestant. Make sure to check with your doctor before taking any new medications. Taking the decongestant will help to decrease the inflammation in or around your sinuses. This allows the mucus to naturally drain from your sinuses. Once the mucus has a chance to drain, you will start to feel better.
5. Avoid smoking or being around others who smoke. Smoke and other irritants such as perfumes, harsh cleaning products, and other irritants sometimes irritate your upper respiratory cavities. Smoking causes the lining of the sinuses to become inflamed or swollen. This damages the sinuses which causes long term infections within the sinus cavities and a constant stuffy nose. If you notice that your stuffy nose is not going away after a few days, make an appointment with your doctor. There may be other underlying causes for your stuffy nose. The doctor will provide a treatment plan for you accordingly.
