Lupus Symptoms In Men

According to the Lupus Foundation of America, 10% of men are diagnosed with Lupus, a dangerous autoimmune disease typically diagnosed in women. Lupus symptoms in men are nearly identical, but are harder to diagnose due to similarities with other illnesses.

Sores, Rashes and Other Skin Ailments

Typical symptoms of Lupus in men are sores or rashes on the face that worsen with sun exposure. Malar rashes (a splotchy dark red patch on the face), open mouth sores and skin lesions are also typical Lupus symptoms.

Poor Circulation in Hands and Feet

Raynaud's Phenomenon, a condition where toes and fingers turn blue from temperature changes, is another Lupus symptom. A lack of blood circulation causes the extremities to turn blue or purple.

Chest Pain or Tightness

This is one of the most common Lupus symptoms in men. It may also promote shortness of breath, depending on the severity of chest pain.

Hair Thinning and Balding

Hair thinning or balding are also typical symptoms for men. This is often harder to diagnose since balding may indicate a variety of illnesses.

Confusion or Memory Loss

Confusion, memory loss and depression often occur in men with Lupus. Lupus attacks all tissues, worsening a man's ability to concentrate and think clearly.

Hallucinations or Schizophrenia-Like Symptoms

Due to its effect on the brain, Lupus may cause hallucinations, anxiety and paranoia. These are serious symptoms that need immediate attention.

Joint Pain, Stiffness and Swelling

Joint pain, stiffness and swelling are common Lupus symptoms in men. Joints may swell, redden, or cause pain too severe to even function.
