Neti Pot Treatment
Many people are discovering the benefits of the neti pot treatment, a process of flushing salt solution through the nasal passages. It is based on an Eastern tradition and is now common throughout the general population, especially among people with sinus problems and nasal allergies.
History
The practice of using a neti pot to irrigate and cleanse the nasal passages and sinuses began as an Ayurvedic tradition. The ritual is known as "jala neti" and is an ancient yogic practice.
Supplies
The neti pot treatment requires a nasal irrigation pot, warm water and a small amount of salt. Natural sea salt is best, while essential oils are an optional addition to the nasal irrigation solultion.
Procedure
Salt is dissolved in warm water and placed in the neti pot. The water is poured into one nostril with the head tilted forward, allowing the saline solution to flow through the nasal passages and sinus cavities and out the other nostril or the mouth.
Benefits
Clinical studies, including several at the University of Wisconsin, have demonstrated that routine use of the neti pot treatment relieves symptoms of chronic sinusitis, reduces reliance on prescription medication and improves quality of life for individuals with sinus problems and allergies.
Considerations
Some individuals prefer to use a bulb syringe or a squeeze bottle in place of a neti pot. All of these methods are beneficial, so it is essentially a matter of personal preference.
