Acid indigestion, also known as heartburn, occurs when too much acid is produced in the upper digestive tract. Heartburn is a painful, burning sensation in the esophagus. Acid indigestion can occur after eating a heavy meal, during pregnancy, and can be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). There are three effective home remedies you can use to combat heartburn.
Prevention
Prevent acid indigestion by avoiding foods associated with it. Spicy foods and acidic foods are the usual culprits. Avoiding heavy meals before bed time can prevent heartburn. Food needs time to digest, and digestion is easier when you are awake and vertical.
Sleep Correctly
Sleep in a semi-seated position. This encourages the acids to stay in the stomach instead of traveling up through your throat. The acid will break down your food in your stomach and you will be able to digest it properly.
Baking Soda
Drink a combination of one part baking soda and three parts water. This will neutralize the acid in your stomach because baking soda is a base. However, baking soda is full of sodium and people with high blood pressure should not use this method.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Swallow a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to neutralize the acid in your stomach. This works the same way as baking soda, but without the sodium. Heartburn symptoms will be quelled almost immediately.
