Prevent Lactose Intolerance

During most of human evolution we did not drink milk after ending breast feeding; thus, many people simply stop producing the enzyme lactase, which allows us to digest dairy products. While there is no way to cure lactose intolerance, there are a variety of ways that you can prevent symptoms and continue enjoying your daily dairy.

Instructions

1. Prevent lactose intolerance symptoms by simply cutting all foods which contain lactose from your diet, including milk, cheese, breads, salad dressings and many more of your favorites. Cutting lactose from your diet entirely is quite difficult; however, it is the best prevention method.

2. Drink milk with other foods instead of drinking it alone. If you save your daily glass of milk for mealtime, the additional foods ingested will help to slow digestion and help prevent the symptoms of lactose intolerance.

3. Take lactase enzymes tablets before eating a meal which contains dairy. While the results of lactase tablets vary from person to person, most people find that they can prevent lactose intolerance the majority of the time. Always read and follow the label carefully.

4. Eat yogurt, which is a great source of calcium and also contains living cultures. While yogurt is relatively high in lactose, studies have shown that the live cultures help the body to create lactase enzymes and prevent lactose intolerance. When purchasing yogurt, make sure the label says active and/or live cultures.

5. Get to know and love friendly bacteria. While yogurt is a great source of living cultures, it is next to impossible to eat yogurt with every meal. Instead, try taking probiotic supplements which also contain living bacteria which aid digestion, alleviate gastrointestinal upset and help prevent lactose intolerance. Again, always follow the manufacturer's instructions for dosage information.
