Is Cayenne Pepper Good For Sore Throats

Sore throats can come from anything, from the onset of the flu to simply talking too loud at a concert. This article will help you determine if cayenne pepper will help your sore throat.

History

Cayenne pepper was used by South American Native Americans thousands of years ago. In fact, it has been traced back to as early as 7000 B.C. Natives used it most often as an edible spice; the combination of peppers and cocoa was reserved for royalty only.

Function

John Gerard, an herbalist, used the plant to treat ailments of the skin and throat. His contemporaries in England used it to treat all sorts of other ailments, such as indigestion, arthritis and kidney stones.

Benefits

Popular opinion (and personal experience) notes that cayenne pepper, dissolved in water and drunk or gargled, can relieve the symptoms of a sore throat. This is because cayenne peppers contain a great deal of Vitamin C, which acts as an antioxidant. They also contain Vitamin A, which helps avoid mucous membrane infections. Lastly, the pain is lessened by capsaicin, the chemical in peppers. Capsaicin works by reducing a substance that transmits pain signals to the brain.

Warning

People who have allergies to peppers should not use this treatment. In addition, if there are other medical issues present, such as ulcers, this treatment should not be used.

Prevention/Solution

To prevent a sore throat to begin with, avoid speaking loudly or talking a great deal for long periods of time. Drink a lot of water to keep hydrated. Take care during winter or flu season; use common sense to stay healthy (wash hands, cover mouth and nose when sneezing, etc.).
