Relieve Fluid From The Middle Ear

A middle ear infection is also called otitis media. An ear infection is usually a secondary infection that springs from an illness, such as a cold. It causes the lining in the ear to become inflamed, which results in a buildup of fluid. This condition can be quite painful. Middle ear infections are more common in children. Ear infections are not usually serious, and most clear up without treatment. There are a few simple home remedies you can try to relieve the pressure of fluid buildup. If these fail to help, your doctor can prescribe medications.

Instructions

1. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Follow the directions on the label. The Mayo Clinic counsels against giving pain relievers to children under the two years of age. Check with your doctor if you are unsure about giving medicine to older children.

2. Soak a small towel in warm water. Wring out the excess water. Lie down and place the compress over your ear. This may help relieve the pain.

3. See your doctor if your ear pain does not improve within a couple of days, or if you are in severe pain. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to the bacteria caused by the ear infection. Antibiotics will not clear up a viral infection. If you take antibiotics, you need to take the full course of drugs; even if you are feeling better, do not stop taking the pills.

4. Ask your doctor about prescription eardrops to numb the pain. You may only use these if the fluid is not draining from your ears. Place the bottle of eardrops in a bowl of warm water (make sure the cap is sealed). Then administer the drops into the ear as directed.

5. Discuss surgical options with your doctor if your child's middle ear infection interferes with hearing or does not improve with antibiotics. Adults do not often have this surgery, according to the Mayo Clinic. This surgical procedure involves inserting tubes into your child's eardrum, which will encourage the fluid to drain. It will also help the pressure in the ears. As your child grows, the tubes will naturally remove themselves.
