Folk Cures For Tinnitus

Human Ear

Tinnitus is the term commonly used to describe ringing in the ears. Ranging from soft humming to loud chainsaw-like buzzing, tinnitus can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent. According to the American Tinnitus Association, more than 50 million Americans suffer from the disorder. While the majority suffer from tinnitus as a result of aging, anyone who has been exposed to loud noises, who has allergies, or who takes medications on a regular basis can develop the disorder. There is no actual cure for tinnitus; however, there are a number of folk remedies that may provide a measure of relief.

Aspirin

Long-term or regular exposure to certain anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, can aggravate tinnitus. If you are taking aspirin every day for a medical condition, ask your primary health care provider about switching to an alternative that you may find more tolerable.

Ginko

The flavonoids and the terpenoids, which occur naturally in ginkgo biloba, create an increase of blood flow to the head. This helps to reduce vertigo and can decrease the symptoms of inner ear disorders. The recommended dosage is 120 to 240 milligrams per day for 12 to 16 weeks to help ease the discomfort caused by chronic tinnitus.

Sinus Spray

Tinnitus can be caused by an infection of the sinuses or seasonal allergies. The thickening of the mucous can affect the function of the middle ear, resulting in a ringing or buzzing sound. To thin the secretions, dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 2 cups of warm water. Then stir in 1 teaspoon of glycerine. Transfer the solution to a spray bottle and thoroughly mist each nostril three times each day until the infection clears up.

Exercise

Keeping fit can help to reduce the symptoms of tinnitus. Not only does it relive physical stress, which can worsen the condition, it releases endorphins that improve mood and increases blood flow to the entire body, including the ears. Find something fun and easy to stick with, like walking, dancing, or swimming in the pool. Set a goal of 20 minutes a day, three to five times a week.

Mulitvitamins

Diets deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, such as zinc and Vitamins A, B and E, have been linked to an increase in frequency of inner ear disorders, including tinnitus. Taking a multivitamin daily that includes these vital elements can help to minimize the symptoms of tinnitus and protect against any further degradation of the membranes of the inner ear.
