Gohyah tea is also known as bitter melon tea.
Gohyah is also known as bitter melon, which is not a melon per se, but a member of the squash family. The fruit of the bitter melon looks like a prickly cucumber and has a seedy, pithy interior. The tea made from the gohyah is purported to have some health benefits.
Controlling Diabetes
Although it has not been scientifically proved, gohyah tea is said to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics. In the Philippines, the the tea is promoted solely for the use of a diabetic tonic. The Bangledesh Medical Research Council also published a 1999 study that found the consumption of gohyah tea significantly lowered blood glucose levels in individuals with diabetes.
Stomach Ailments
Gohyah tea is said to relieve stomach ailments, with the exception of ulcers. The tea has a bitter taste, but is believed to relieve gastrointestinal distress when sipped after meals.
Antioxidant Properties
Gohyah tea is full of antioxidants that help cleanse and repair the body. Regular consumption of gohyah tea helps rid the body of fungus, bacteria and viruses. A preparation of the tea, which has been cooled, can be applied to wounds to clean them and promote healing.
Gohyah and Cancer Studies
Switzerland is the site of several cancer studies documenting the effects of gohyah tea. The tea seemed to have a diminishing effect on cancerous tumors in albino mice. Scientists documented an 83 percent shrinkage rate in the size of tumors in the subjects studied. Consumption of the tea seemed to lower lipid and triglyceride levels in the body.
