HPV consists of over 100 different human papillomaviruses. These infections are very common and affect almost 25 million people. Many types of diseases are caused by HPV from warts to cancers. Treatment for HPV depends on the type of infection, but there are now vaccines that may prevent some forms of the virus. Symptoms vary in type and location and some types of HPV don't exhibit symptoms at all.
Common Warts
These are rough bumps that usually appear on the fingers and hands. It is mostly children that get these benign skin growths. In some cases warts are painful.
Flat Warts
These are slightly raised benign growths that are darker than your skin tone. Children and young adults are usually affected. Flat warts appear on the face, neck, elbows, hands, knees and wrists.
Plantar Warts
These are hard, benign growths on the bottom of the feet. It is mostly adults affected with plantar warts. For some people these warts are painful.
Upper Respiratory Warts
Some HPVs cause warts in the mouth, nose, tonsils or larynx.
Genital Warts
These lesions can appear on the genitals or around the anus. These warts are noncancerous and don't cause any pain.
Cervical Cancer
Persistent genital wart infections greatly increase the chances of getting cervical cancer.
