Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by an obsession with food and staying thinner than normal. Individuals with anorexia may intentionally starve themselves or exercise constantly. Anorexia most often affects females, and can eventually lead to serious complications.
Physical Appearance
Individuals with anorexia may appear very thin. They may have thin hair that falls out easily. Also, they may have brittle nails and dry skin.
Medical Symptoms
Individuals suffering from anorexia may have low blood pressure and low blood counts. Also, they may suffer from extreme fatigue and fainting spells. In addition, constipation is a common symptom. Females with anorexia may stop having a menstrual period.
Behavioral Symptoms
Individuals with anorexia may refuse to eat and may always say they are not hungry. When they do eat, they may only eat certain foods, or they may seem to be overly concerned with food. They also may exercise excessively.
Emotional Symptoms
Individuals with anorexia may seem to lack emotions. Or they may become defensive when confronted about their illness. In addition, they may be overly concerned about being fat.
Serious Complications
Prolonged anorexia can lead to a host of serious complications, such as anemia and problems with the heart, lungs and kidneys. These complications can have debilitating effects, and may even turn fatal.
