Recipes Using Essential Oils For The Face

Essential oils are used at spas and in commercial products for a variety of facial treatments. The recipes below are easy-to-make and most require a blender. Make sure all tools, bowls and bottles for storing are sterile by using hot water to rinse. Try using the facial mask treatments at least twice a week. Masks and scrubs are best applied at night, right before going to bed--this way the skin has ample time to rejuvenate and absorb residual nutrients.

Dry Skin

The addition of castor oil to this mask makes this an extremely nourishing mask.

½ avocado fruit

1 tsp. castor oil

1 egg yolk

½ banana

Blend this combination to a fine pulp and let it sit on a freshly washed face for about 15 minutes. Rinse well with cool water.

Oily Skin

Tea Tree and lemon oils are known to alleviate acne and reduce skin inflammation.

½ cup oatmeal

1 to 2 drops lemon oil

1 to 2 drops tea tree oil

½ tsp. of honey

2 tbsp. filtered water

In a sterile blender (use very hot water to rinse,) blend oats to a fine powder. Make a paste with the oats and water and then add honey and the essential oils. Use fingers to mix well. Apply to skin and leave on until dry. Rinse well with warm water, then splash face with cool water.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is usually very sensitive to harsh ingredients, but still needs to be well moisturized. Try this nourishing mask.

½ cup oatmeal

½ an avocado

1 inch chunk of papaya (you can substitute papaya for strawberries or blueberries)

1 inch strip of aloe vera gel (cut from the inner leaf)

2 drops of eucalyptus oil

2 drops of lavender oil

Blend the oatmeal to a fine pulp and then add papaya (or berries) and aloe. Add a little filtered water if the mixture is too dry. Remove from blender and add essential oils. Let this mask sit on the face for about 15 minutes. Rinse well and use a light moisturizer.

Nightly Rejuvenating Serum

This oil blend will leave your skin looking fresh and new when you wake up. Use at night after washing your face with a mild soap.

Evening primrose oil

Almond oil

Avocado oil

Vitamin E oil

Castor oil

Olive oil

Add equal parts of each emollient, about 1 tbsp. each to a small clear bottle. Use a funnel when adding the oils to the bottle. Shake well. Apply a thin layer over your face.

Almond Scrub

Almond nut is widely used to tone the skin. Licorice is also known for its skin toning and brightening properties. Neroli rejuvenates the skin. Soak almonds in warm water for about an hour before grinding, for a softer scrub.

½ cup almonds

1 tbsp. oatmeal

2 tbsp. soured milk/sour cream

2 drops of neroli oil

1 drop of licorice root extract

1 tbsp. of almond oil

Grind almonds and oatmeal in a blender to a fine pulp or powder. Add soured milk to soften the mixture. Add licorice root extract, neroli and almond oils. Make sure the almond is finely ground. Rub into face gently and rinse well.
