Return After Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is a big deal not to be taken lightly. You won't feel like a million bucks the next day, but there are things that you can do to put yourself back on your feet and feeling like your old self before your knee problems. Follow these steps to find out how.

Instructions

Return After Knee Replacement Surgery

1. Follow the instructions of your physical therapist. A lot of people don't feel they're ready to get up and walk the day after surgery, but it is a necessary thing if you hope to recover completely. Pay attention to the exercises your therapist gives you and do them on your own without being told at least once or twice during those first few days.

2. Enter into a physical rehabilitation center before going back home if at all possible. The therapists in the center will provide an exercise regimen where you will be working your knee between 3 or 4 hours per day. They will also give you practical advice on do things on your own, as well as avoid falls and be safe in your home.

3. Get involved in physical therapy as soon as possible and as often as possible once you are home. It can be at a center or a situation where the therapist comes to your house. When not in therapy, exercise as often as you can on your own. Try to excerise at least twice a day for the first month or so. The exercises will get easier over time.

4. After your formal physical therapy is over, continue doing the exercises your therapist gave you and get involved in an individual exercise program. This is a good time to start going back to the gym or getting involved in aerobics classes. However, you must take it easy, as you don't have your stamina back yet. Your strength will gradually return as long as you continue therapy.

5. Return to work as soon as possible. Working will help keep you physically active and from getting bored at home. At work, you can continue your therapy by taking the stairs instead of the elevator. If you are retired, get reacquainted with some of your old activities.
