Alarm Clock
Benjamin Franklin famously said, "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." Other benefits include getting a good start on the day, being able to watch the sunrise, having time for breakfast, having time for exercise and beating the rush hour on your commute. Try getting up earlier today and see what benefits you derive.
Instructions
Get Up Earlier
1. Start slowly. Set your alarm clock for only 15 minutes earlier than usual. Get used to that time for a few days. Then get up another 15 minutes earlier for a few days. Keep getting up earlier until you reach your desired wake up time.
2. Go to bed when you are sleepy. You should fall asleep right away. You can try going to bed earlier than usual because you are getting up earlier than normal, but you may not be able to fall asleep.
3. Put the alarm clock far away from the bed. Choose a spot where you will have to get out of bed to turn it off. A place that takes extra effort to get to is ideal--perhaps high on a shelf or under the dresser.
4. Put a glass of water by the alarm clock and drink it as soon as you hit the alarm. This will help you wake up.
5. Get out of the bedroom. Go to the bathroom and wash your face with cold water, or head to the kitchen. Just get yourself out of the room you sleep in.
6. Don't hit the snooze button. You will sabotage your efforts to get up earlier. Don't rationalize getting back into bed. Don't allow your brain to talk you out of getting up.
7. Buy a programmable coffee maker and some quality coffee. Set your coffee maker to begin making coffee about five minutes before your alarm goes off. You will smell delicious, tasty coffee brewing when you get up, and you know it will be ready for you as soon as you hit the kitchen.
8. Pick out your clothes the night before. You'll be able to skip any deliberations at the closet and be ready to start the day right away.
9. Have something planned for the early morning. Setting a goal for the morning will motivate you to get up.
