Prilosec gained FDA approval in 1989 as the first prescription-strength proton pump inhibitor, a class of drugs that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is now available in 10 mg and 20 mg prescription-only capsules and a 20 mg over the counter version. Both versions are indicated for the treatment of frequent heartburn and esophageal damage caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease or other acid related conditions. Talk to your doctor before beginning treatment for frequent heartburn. She can determine the cause of your heartburn and whether Prilosec or Prilosec OTC are appropriate treatments for you.
