Characteristics Of Topaz Stones

Topaz crystals come in a wide variety of brilliant colors.

According to the article "Gemstones: Topaz" on the Encyclopedia of Gemstones, the word topaz comes from an ancient Sanskrit word meaning 'fire' (Reference 1). With such a name you can expect the premier characteristic of the gemstone to be its brilliance and color. The topaz stone symbolizes strength and courage and is often used to mark the occasion for the fourth and 19th wedding anniversaries (Reference 1). Additional characteristics of topaz include its colors, origins, and spiritual properties.

Colors

Topaz is primarily associated with the color blue as blue topaz is most often used in jewelry. However, topaz comes in a variety of colors and hues. According to the Encyclopedia of Gemstones, pink or red topaz is extremely rare and therefore quite expensive (Reference 1). Topaz can appear in a wide variety of colors including shades of purple, yellow, gold, green, and peach. Topaz can also appear completely clear or colorless and is known as "pure" topaz (Reference 1).

Origin and Care

The article "Imperial Topaz Points" on the Healing Crystals website states that various types of topaz can be found in Russia, Brazil, Australia, Namibia, the United States and Mexico (Reference 2). The Encyclopedia of Gemstones states that topaz contains fluorine and usually grows to great size when uninterrupted. Topaz is a somewhat delicate stone and can be easily damaged if not properly protected. If you own topaz jewelry or stones, be careful to keep them wrapped in cloth if they are stored with other jewelry or stones as the sharp points can scratch the surface of the gem.

Spiritual Properties

One of the most interesting characteristics of topaz are its spiritual properties. The Healing Crystals website states that topaz is a stone of sight: one that can render practitioners invisible to those they wish to be concealed from, as well as a stone that helps improve eyesight when worn or meditated with regularly. The site also suggests that topaz helps unify the root, sacral, and solar plexus chakras to the divine chakra or the crown (Reference 2). Topaz can also be used to clear away negative energies and replenish energies that have been drained from spiritual practices or everyday stressors.
