Improve Lasik Results

Lasik surgery is purely elective; you always can opt to wear glasses or contact lenses. However, if you and your doctor decide that Lasik surgery is right for you, know that the results of Lasik surgery are better than they used to be. For example, many people have complained about problems with night vision or difficulty wearing sunglasses because of glare or halos. New technology will reduce that. Discuss all the options with your doctor before scheduling surgery, and prepare yourself for a successful outcome.

Instructions

1. Select an experienced surgeon. Complications such as infection, chronic dry eye, Lasik flap problems, halos and glare are less likely to happen with an experienced surgeon.

2. Assess your health, because it can affect your Lasik result. For example, if you have a disease that makes it harder for your body to heal, such as diabetes or an autoimmune disease, you are more likely to have complications. Some medications, such as retinoic acid and steroids, also can prevent proper healing.

3. Check at www.fda.gov to ensure that the laser used for your Lasik surgery is FDA-approved.

4. Do not rub your eyes. Right after surgery, your vision will be blurry or hazy, and most people instinctively rub their eyes when this happens. But rubbing your eyes can dislodge the flap that the doctor cut and repositioned. If that happens, you will need more treatment.

5. Take some time off work. Your eyes might be sensitive to light after surgery. You should rest your eyes for a few days and not expose them to too much light or stress.

6. See your doctor regularly. You should see your doctor 24 to 48 hours after surgery, and you should schedule regular visits for at least six months.

7. If your doctor prescribes eye drops to prevent infection or inflammation, be sure to use them.

8. Do not use your contact lenses. Even if your vision is not perfect, do not wear contacts in eyes that have had Lasik surgery.

9. Wait one to three days before playing non-contact sports.

10. Wait four weeks to participate in contact sports. You do not want anything to bump your eye.

11. Wait to use eye makeup. Your doctor might recommend that you wait up to two weeks before using eye makeup or creams.

12. Do not swim or sit in the hot tub for one to two months after surgery.
