Hair loss may be a result of genetics, illness or medications used to treat conditions such as cancer. Products available over the counter or by prescription are available to promote the growth of new hair or slow down the loss of hair. Women considering using products to prevent hair loss should first consult a physician, as some products are not
recommended for women of childbearing age.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil (Rogaine for Women) is an over the counter foam that is rubbed into the scalp to grow new hair and decrease hair loss.
Anthralin
Anthralin (Dritho-Scalp) is an ointment rubbed in and then washed off, and may stimulate new hair to grow after 12 or more weeks of use.
Corticosteroids
Cortisone injections or corticosteroid pills may be prescribed by a doctor and can result in hair growth within four weeks of starting treatment.
Hair Plugs
Hair plugs may be made of real or artificial hair and are surgically implanted into the scalp to blend in with existing hair.
Side Effects
Side effects of hair growth products include itching and irritation of the scalp, and new hair may be finer or thinner than existing hair.
Alternative Treatments
Wigs and other types of hair pieces are products available for women who have experienced complete hair loss due to chemotherapy or partial hair loss from other causes.
Warning
According to the Mayo Clinic, women should not use or even touch finasteride (Propecia) which is a hair product made for men due to the risk of serious pregnancy complications.
