Causes of Hair Loss in Kids


The causes of hair loss in children varies. Hair loss occurs because of diseases, psychological problems, medications,eating habits and environmental causes. Some of the diseases that cause hair loss in kids are tinea capitis, diabetes, cancer and many others.The American Hair Loss Association,advices adults to seek the advice of a pediatrician, if they notice any hair loss in children.


Diseases








One of the diseases that causes hair loss in children is tinea capitis, ringworm of the scalp. It is a fungal infection of the scalp's skin, eyebrows and eyelashes. It can move to the shafts of the hair and follicles. Tinea capitis is a superficial disease that has many other names such as tinea tonsurans. It is considered dermatophytosis.


Psychological Problems


Psychological problems cause hair loss in children. Trichotillomania is an example. It is considered an obsessive-compulsive disorder. This is because the patient impulsively pluck the hair. Patches appear on the scalps of children. The same patients may suffer from trichophagy. Trichophagy is eating the hair which is plucked.


Medications


One of the side effects of some medications is hair loss and thinning of the hair. Chemotherapy and drugs that contain isotretinoin and lithium, such as drugs used for treating acne or bipolar disorder.


Eating Habits


Poor eating habits cause hair loss. Children have to get enough nutrients such as proteins, minerals, and vitamins. Minerals support hair growth. Protein deficiency causes hair loss. That is why some vegetarians suffer from hair loss if they don't get enough protein from non-meat sources.


Environmental Causes


Pollution causes hair loss. Chlorine, metals, minerals and water pollution cause hair loss. Selenium, for instance, is a toxic element that may get into water through mines or petroleum refineries. People who reside near mines or petroleum refineries are affected.
