As men age, the frequency of their need to urinate increases. In older men especially, the urge to urinate becomes greater more often. But there are also disorders that are not only limited to older men that cause frequent urination. Frequent urination is defined as the feeling of always always feeling as if you have to go.
Definition
A normal person can sleep from six to eight hours without the need to urinate, but people who wake up in the night multiple times to urinate suffer from frequent urination. Frequent urination is not only limited to the night, however, as the symptoms may be present around the clock.
Common Cause
Urinary-tract infections are most often to blame for frequent urination. When the bladder becomes inflamed, this inflammation reduces its capacity to store urine, increasing the need to void any and all urine.
Interstitial Cystitis
Another common cause for frequent urination is interstitial cystitis, a condition in which the bladder is constantly inflamed. Intolerance to potassium is often to blame for interstitial cystitis.
Enlarged Prostate
An enlarged prostate causes the muscles of the bladder to contract, squeezing the urethra. This tightness forces out more urine, more often.
Other Causes
Diabetes, cancer, caffeine and some medications are all other causes of frequent urination in men.
