Cyclobenzaprine is a prescription muscle relaxer used to treat muscle spasms and pain that results from various injuries. Most doctors will typically prescribe rest and possibly physical therapy in addition to cyclobenzaprine to help a patient recover. Cyclobenzaprine is taken orally, typically three times a day, but it is not intended to be used over a long period of time. Most doctors will prescribe it for a maximum of two or three weeks. Cyclobenzaprine is also available under the brand name Flexeril.
How it Works
Cyclobenzaprine affects the nervous system, helping reduce muscle spasms. It does not affect how muscles function, it only relaxes muscles that have been sprained or strained through injury.
Non-Serious Side Effects
Some people who take cyclobenzaprine may notice dizziness or drowsiness. Because of this, use caution when driving or performing other tasks requiring concentration until you know how it will affect you. Other side effects include constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, fatigue, mild stomach upset and nervousness.
Serious Side Effects
Some side effects of cyclobenzaprine should be reported to your doctor because they may signify a problem that requires treatment. These side effects, which are rare, include chest pain, jaundice, severe vomiting or dizziness, mood changes, confusion, fainting, rapid or irregular heartbeat, arm or leg numbness, difficulty urinating, weakness of one side of the body, seizures and sudden, severe stomach pain.
Warnings
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should inform their doctor of their condition before taking cyclobenzaprine. Additionally, people with a history of stroke, liver disease, heart problems, cerebral palsy, glaucoma, increased eye pressure, brain or spinal cord disease or difficulty urinating should inform their doctor before taking the medicine.
Drug Interactions
Cyclobenzaprine is known to interact with some other drugs, including MAOI inhibitors, tramadol, droperidol, fluoxetine and rasagiline. Some of these potential interactions can cause serious problems, including heart conditions and seizures. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about any medications you are taking before using cyclobenzaprine.
