Orthodontics is a special branch of dentistry concentrated on correcting improper bites. Orthodontists must receive special training in order to perform certain procedures, whether they involve orthotic devices such as dental braces, or surgery. These procedures require the use of many specialized tools.
Facts
As defined by Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, orthodontics is the area of dentistry concerned with the correction of abnormal dentofacial structures. It includes the treatment of malocclusions of the teeth and the surrounding muscles and nerves. The design, application, and control of functional and corrective oral appliances are aspects of an orthodontic practice.
History
The history of orthodontics is not as extensive as the history of dentistry as a whole, but it still dates back to the 19th century. According to Ada.org, in 1899 Edward Hartley Angle defined the different forms of malocclusion. He was credited with making orthodontics a specialty in dentistry, and he established the first school of orthodontics in 1900. Edward Hartley Angle also founded the first orthodontic society in 1901, as well as the first dental specialty journal in 1907. In 1930 The American Board of Orthodontics was founded.
Tools
There are numerous tools used in the specialty of orthodontics. Although different specialists prefer to use different tools, a few basic tools are used. Bracesinfo.com lists the following as orthodontic tools: band remover, bite stick, X-ray viewer, cheek retractors, curing light, distal end cutter, explorer, mathieu plier, pin and ligature cutter, scaler, and twirl on.
Function
Each orthodontic tool has a specific purpose. Bracesinfo.com lists the functions of numerous tools. The function of a band remover is to remove bands from brackets. An X-ray viewer is used to analyze X-rays of the mouth.
Check retractors are used to assist the orthodontist by moving the lips and cheeks out of the way while work is being done.
A curing light is used when brackets are initially placed. The light cures the material so that the brackets are secured to the teeth.
A distal end cutter is used to cut extra wire off of the ends of the arch wire. An explorer is used to examine teeth, and can also be used in band removal.
A scaler is used to remove extra cement from the tooth, and to check for gaps that are present. These are just a few of the numerous tools used by an orthodontist.
Benefits
Orthodontic work has more benefits than just straightening teeth. According to The American Dental Association, orthodontists also treat malocclusions, or improper bites. Correcting bites can make teeth cleaning a much easier task. Improper cleaning can result in decay, gum disease, and in severe cases tooth loss. Improper bites can also affect chewing, speaking, wearing of the teeth, and jaw problems. All of these problems can be fixed through orthodontic work, resulting in better oral health.
