The reeds act as a wick drawing the essential oils from a bottle or vase, allowing the oils to evaporate or diffuse into the air. The strength of the aroma depends on the number of reeds used and the type of essential oil. Different essential oils evaporate at various rates, so it is important to experiment with different scents to find one that suits your needs. Reed diffusers can last two to three months with little maintenance.

Make and Use a Reed Aroma Diffuser
1. Choose a small glass bottle or vase to hold the oil and reeds. Do not use plastic or metal containers because the oil will react with the surface and cause corrosion, or change the scent of the oil. Light effects the chemical composition of essential oils, so darker containers work better than clear and/or colorless containers.
2. Add jojoba oil and 50 drops of the essential oil to the container.
3. Cover the container and invert several times to mix the oil. If you chose a container that did not come with a cap, cover the opening with plastic wrap and hold tightly.
4. Place diffuser reeds into the bottle. At least 3 inches of reed should stick above the container opening. The more reeds you place in the bottle, the stronger the scent will be. Add or remove reeds to adjust the potency of the smell.
5. Place completed diffuser in a well-ventilated area. Do not place diffuser in a corner or on a bookshelf since the air flow will be limited. A hall table, coffee table or kitchen counter are ideal spaces.
6. Allow two or three days for the oil to sufficiently permeate the reeds and begin to diffuse scent into the room.
7. Flip diffuser reeds every two weeks to refresh the scent in the room. This encourages the oil to travel back and forth along the reed.
