Government Regulations For Nursing Homes

The All Health website reports that the U.S. federal government introduced minimum regulations covering the care of occupants within a nursing home. Although these regulations are the minimum standards for nursing homes in the U.S., some states have adopted their own tougher regulations.

History

According to All Health, the regulations introduced under federal law in 1987 were a response to public concern over the care and operating procedures of nursing homes in the U.S. After an investigation by the Institute of Medicine, the Nursing Home Reform Act was passed into law by Congress that year.

Funding

U.S. government regulations are used by nursing homes receiving funding from federal funds, such as the Medicaid and Medicare programs, according to the Nursing Home Alert website. Alongside regulations concerning the quality of care for nursing home residents, regulations require nursing homes to maintain the quality of life of their residents.

Regulations

Nursing Home Alert reports the regulations to include each nursing home has sufficient staff to meet the needs of residents with training provided to maintain a residents quality of life. Individual plans are also created for each resident following a review of each residents capacity.
