Room Spray Recipes

Make your own room sprays.

Room sprays provide an effective and convenient way to disperse essential oils or fragrance oils into the air. When blended, certain oils create powerful odor-removing, disinfecting, calming, mood-lifting and stress-reducing room sprays. Making your own room spray blends is rewarding, as they can be customized for your personal needs and preferences.

The Basics

Create a basic room spray by filling a 4-oz. spray bottle with spring, distilled or purified water. Add the appropriate essential oil or oils, replace the cap and shake well. Set the spray bottle's mister to the finest setting to allow for greater projection of the solution, and spray directly into the room. This solution can be used to refresh upholstery, carpets, clothing or curtains, or simply to fragrance the air as desired. Shake the bottle well before each use to thoroughly distribute the oils in the water.

Pure essential oils should be used, if available. Fragrance oils may be used as a last resort, but they will not add any beneficial properties to your room sprays, aside from a nice smell. They will also fade with time, whereas essential-oil room sprays become stronger as they mature. Essential oils and fragrance oils can be purchased from natural health stores and craft and hobby stores, or ordered online. Purchase bottles with dropper lids, or procure a separate dropper for measuring the oils.

Any of the oils used in the following recipes may be exchanged for others with similar properties. As a general rule when making your own blends, use approximately 150 drops of oil to every 4 oz. of water.

Fragrance Blends for Odor Removal

If your goal is to simply improve the smell or reduce odors in a particular room, try any combination of oils you like to create a unique fragrance blend. Try using 50 drops lavender oil, 50 drops rose oil, 30 drops geranium oil and 20 drops bergamot oil to create a floral spray. Use 50 drops spruce oil, 50 drops allspice oil, 30 drops rosemary oil and 20 drops sandalwood oil to make a spicy spray. Use 50 drops lime oil, 50 drops tangerine oil, 30 drops grapefruit oil and 20 drops lemon oil for a citrus spray.

Disinfectant Room Spray

Eucalyptus essential oil is obtained from the leaves and twigs of the tree, and is an antibacterial and antifungal substance. Room sprays containing eucalyptus will disinfect the air, and are suitable for use in sickrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Use 50 drops eucalyptus oil, 50 drops tea tree oil, 30 drops peppermint oil and 20 drops bergamot essential oil. Tea tree, peppermint and bergamot are also believed to have antibacterial or antiseptic properties, and will enhance the aroma and effectiveness of the spray.

Calming or Relaxing Room Spray

Several essential oils have the ability to reduce anxiety and stress when inhaled. When used together to form a room spray, they can create a relaxing atmosphere in the home. Use 50 drops lavender oil, 50 drops orange oil and 50 drops lemongrass oil to create a calming spray. Use 50 drops geranium oil, 50 drops Roman chamomile oil, 30 drops lavender oil and 20 drops rosemary oil for a relaxing blend. Spray into the bedroom before bed to promote a restful night's sleep.
